ReCreation, is the final exhibition in the critically acclaimed exhibition series, The Body in Women’s Art Now, curated by Philippa Found, Gallery Director of ROLLO Contemporary Art, London, showing at The New Hall Art Collection, Cambridge and ROLLO Contemporary Art, London.
The exhibition brings together interactive performance artworks, video-art, prints and performance-video works by some of today’s most cutting edge artists, who by using new technologies and utilizing the internet as a source material in their art - using sites such as Second Life, Google, Twitter and Facebook – create artworks that comment upon the shifting status and experience of the body in a technologically driven world, and its impact on the body in art.
The exhibition will include critically acclaimed Israeli artist Miri Segal’s video work BRB in which the artist takes a journey through cyberspace with her assistant, to the new continent of Second Life. In the thirty minutes of the video, they visit a space for public orgies, witness conversations between philosophers’ around a cyber campfire and we see a virtual gallery constructed by Segal in the sky of Second Life. Miri Segal’s work has shown in solo exhibitions at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Tel Aviv, and P. S.1 Center of Contemporary Art, New York, as well as being shown in group exhibitions at Tate Modern, London, The Haifa Museum of Art, Haifa, and in screening at the Centre Pompidou, Paris. The show will include Anne-Marie Schleiner’s video art video game, Operation Urban Terrain (O.U.T.): An urban wireless gaming intervention acted out in the streets of New York which responded to the training of the US military by use of video games. Schleiner’s works have been exhibited at international public spaces such as Cornerhouse Galleries, Manchester, UK, Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castelló, Spain, The New Museum, New York, and have been included in the Whitney Biennale, New York. The exhibition will also show video art work, Ana Magnani/take 2, created entirely on Second Life by critically acclaimed Italian artist, Gazira Babeli, who has shown at international institutions such as Museu d'Art Modern i Contemporani de Palma and will exhibit at MOCA LA. The exhibition will also include video and interactive performance works by young London based artist Helen Carmel Benigson and her alter ego rapper Princess Belsize Dollar - described as “A Pipilotti Rist for a harder, more media-savvy generation au fait with 'The Hills' and ‘The Kardashians’ (where) the world of ugly pink GIFs, Twitter profiles, aspirational feminine imagery and over-saturated colours and patterns are put together in a fantasy mash-up”[1] Benigson’s critically acclaimed work has been shown in museum solo show’s at the Irma Stern Museum, Cape Town, the James Hockey & Foyer Galleries, University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, and has seen her recognised as the Artist to Watch by The Independent Newspaper and as part of Brit-Arts New Wave and a successor to Hirst and Emin.
