    Beverly Ayling-Smith

    My work is informed by research into the English Shroud, particularly the use of Holland linen in the seventeenth century and the requirement of the Burial in Wool Act of 1660 that 4½ ells of fabric be used for each shroud. The relationship between cloth and the body lasts longer than a lifetime - I have used the length of buried cloth as a reminder of our own mortality, the common denominator of human experience; with partly revealed text suggesting rituals and processes that have been undertaken for our remembrance.

    My current work concerns the relationships that exist between artist, textile tools and materials. More specifically, I am focussing on the relationship between tactility and the visual within textile practice, looking for new ways in which to present the textile to an audience which engages their tactile sensitivities.
