Born in Ohio, Jean Lodge was head of printmaking at the Ruskin School, Oxford for many years. The model for the girl in the hat was a friend of the artist. It was based on a photograph taken in Jerusalem in 1996. It was only after the work had come to New Hall, that Jean Lodge realised that the friend had been a New Hall student, Lucia Walker (who read Archaeology and Anthropology, 1975-78).
