About Estelle Thompson
Estelle Thompson's works of the late 1980s have been described as existing in "a purely painterly space" midway between representation and abstraction. "These are pieces which convey a joyousness in their own existence ... there are some gestures made to natural phenomena but these chosen objects are lifted and abstracted from their place of belonging and re-installed in the field of pure colour. There is an absolute calm and a quietness which pervades each of the pieces" (Angela McRobbie).
