    Summertime and the Tripos [1980]
    Ink on paper, 16.5 x 21.5 cms
    Donated by John Rawson 1999.

Margaret Brown read Classics at New Hall from 1978 to 1981. She gave this drawing to Elizabeth Rawson, who had been her Director of Studies, when the latter left to take up the Lectureship at Corpus Christi, Oxford which she held until her death in 1988. It shows a student revising under a tree in Orchard Court with the Dome behind, and is reminiscent of P.D. James' description of New Hall in An Unsuitable Job for a Woman (1972) as 'too distractingly pretty to be conducive to serious study'.
